TRANSlation

It began with a plan. The plan is the most important part of this project and the first thing that came to be when beginning to design a building. Before even knowing the program and even realizing a space would be designed a collage was made. The collage consists of two very different things, the electric guitar and pottery. Pieces were taken from these objects and blended with one another until the very item that it originated from was not visible. The guitar and pottery have things in common visually even if they vary so much. Their features emphasized in the blending of the two. A new object formed.

The image on the left is that combination. From the image is where the plan of the building derived. The shapes and curves were further emphasized. The obvious separations were  made into various different programs for the odd art museum located in Silverlake, CA. With the odd shapes came the odd plan. Parts were changed edges were made softer and rooms were formed so it can be circulated.

When starting to work more dimensionally and not only in plan the structure was simplified, sectionally it is more simple due to the fact that th plan was so complex. When walls were extruded upwards, at different heights on the same levels, the complexity of the shapes and ridges in the lines remained. This gave way to play with a more reflective material, taking the shapes and mirroring them. This is an interior based project, this is  why the images shown are of the interior spaces. These spaces gave way to small details that were concentrated on in a micro level. The plan formed complex spaces that could be experienced in unusual ways creating and odd art building in itself.

There are certain parts of a project that seem to stand out more than others. These pieces are what is most memorable and usually are the parts that were most considered while designing. In this project it could be said it was the way the interior spaces came about to be. The reflectivity of the materials used, the awkward shapes the walls make when extruded or the plan in general, everything is considered and connected when making these design choices.
